Staying in Shape

Surfing is not strictly a physical sport as there are many mental aspects as well. It is equally important for you to be physically fit as it is for you to be able to maintain a calm composed and focused mentality while surfing. You may have seen surf movies where the surfers practice holding their breath for minutes at a time. Well I hate to break it to you but this isn’t just practiced in the movies and it isn’t easy.

You may take part in cardio exercises or weight lifting but truly no other activity will make you better fit for surfing than Yoga. Yoga will not only increase your agility and strength but will also help your balance, increase your mindfulness and correct your breathing patterns. Yoga also provides many emotional and spiritual benefits. Yoga helps an individual to really get in touch with one’s mind and body. Knowing your body will help you read different situations whether you are above or underneath the water.

There are many different poses practiced in yoga. Some help to open your hips, others to increase torso rotation, and some to even calm your nervous system. Some of our recommendations are:

Upward Facing Dog

Downward Dog

Garudasana

Malasana

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana/ One Legged King Pigeon Pose

Here are a few names of professional surfers that swear by yoga:

Rochelle Ballard

Kelly Slater

Greg Long

Getting into yoga will help your surfing in the present and future and will keep your body in the physical condition to keep surfing for life.
