Surfing: What Clothes Should I Wear?

When it comes to surfing, choosing the right clothes is crucial. The right attire not only enhances your performance but also keeps you protected from the elements. If you’re new to the sport and wondering what clothes you should wear while surfing in San Diego, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we will explore the essential clothing items for a memorable and comfortable surfing experience. So, grab your board and let’s dive in!

1. Rash Guard
One of the most important pieces of clothing for any surfer is a rash guard. This specialized shirt is designed to protect your skin from the harsh elements, such as sunburn and rashes caused by rubbing against the surfboard. Available in various materials, including neoprene and spandex, rash guards offer flexibility and protection while also offering some insulation in colder waters. Make sure to choose one with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

2. Board Shorts

Board shorts are a staple in any surfer’s wardrobe. These shorts are specifically designed for water sports and provide comfort, style, and functionality. Look for board shorts that are made of quick-drying material and have a comfortable fit. Opt for ones with a secure tie or Velcro closure to ensure they stay in place during your surf session. Additionally, choose board shorts that have a good range of motion to allow for unrestricted movements while riding the waves.

3. Wetsuit

In colder waters or during the winter season, a wetsuit is essential to keep you warm and protected. Wetsuits are typically made of neoprene, a synthetic rubber that offers excellent insulation and flexibility. The thickness of the wetsuit will vary depending on the water temperature. In San Diego, where the water is relatively warmer, a 3/2mm wetsuit should suffice for most surfing conditions. However, if you’re planning to surf in colder regions, you may need a thicker wetsuit to stay comfortable.

4. Booties

Booties, also known as surf boots, are an optional but highly beneficial piece of surfing attire. They provide protection for your feet from sharp rocks on the ocean floor and help maintain warmth during colder sessions. When choosing booties, opt for ones with a sturdy sole to protect against sharp objects and a snug fit to prevent water from entering. Additionally, look for booties made of durable materials that can withstand the rigors of the ocean.

5. Sun Protection Accessories

Surfing often involves spending long hours under the sun, making sun protection accessories a must. Invest in a wide-brimmed hat or a surf cap to shield your face and head from the sun. Sunglasses with polarized lenses are also recommended to reduce glare and protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Don’t forget to apply a waterproof sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed areas of your body, such as your face, neck, and hands.

6. Towel and Changing Robe

After an exhilarating surf session, you’ll want a dry towel and a changing robe to keep you warm and comfortable. A microfiber towel is a great option as it is lightweight, dries quickly, and is highly absorbent. A changing robe, also known as a surf poncho, offers privacy while changing out of your wet gear. It’s convenient and helps keep you warm, shielding you from gusts of wind.
